Caulfield Sound Shell

Caulfield Sound Shell

The Caulfield Sound Shell is a pavillion-like multipurpose space designed and developed in a collaborative design & make project between Monash University in Melbourne and the school of art and design in Kassel (Kunsthochschule Kassel). The project involved a total of about 30 students.

The design of the structure focuses on its usability as both performance space on special occasions aswell as serving as a place for students to meet and hang out on the campus. The prototype of the sound shell – a small part of the overall structure – was built at the school of art and design in Kassel during 2014. In 2015 the erection of the complete structure followed on Monash University's Caulfield campus in Melbourne, Australia.

My part in the project was the development of the inner structural framework aswell as the digital planning of most of the prototype's material and assembly logic. Most of it was automated to the point where the output is already usable fabrication data for a CNC milling machine or waterjet cutter.
